The Problem

At music festivals, making decisions as a group is tough.
Everyone has different artists they want to see, and individual needs like grabbing food/drinks, using the restroom, or taking breaks often lead to people splitting up.
The Result?
Missed moments, confusion, and difficulty reconnecting.
Without a reliable way to stay in sync, the experience becomes disjointed and frustrating.
How Might We
Helping groups stay in sync, while still letting everyone enjoy the best festival has to offer?
I interviewed 8 frequent festival-goers who regularly attend large-scale events like, Dream State, EDC and Tomorrowland
Going into these conversations, my goal was to better understand:
How people make decisions in dynamic, high-energy environments?

Research

Through affinity mapping, I identified key challenges festival-goers face,
particularly difficulties in regrouping after splitting up for different interests
Pain Points including:

  • crowd navigation
  • decision-making
  • and time management

These recurring pain points revealed major gaps in existing festival apps.
With these themes in mind, I refined my design focus to address:
seamless group coordination, real-time navigation, and efficient scheduling to enhance the overall festival experience.

This overlapping issue was reported by most interviewees.

Considering the high cost and excitement that festivals bring,
the problem deserves proper attention and a well-designed solution.

Solutions

To address the overlapping pain points, I designed solutions that combine interactive micro-animations, and tech support including AI assistance, a festival map with a crowd density heat map, a system to locate friends and vendors within the festival area, as well as a syncing and voting system for planning schedules.

AI assistance

AI assistant chatbot, which helps users navigate and connect with features within the app. For example, if a user wants to find a vendor that sells vegan pizza, the chatbot not only confirms its availability but also shows the user where it’s located on the map

Democratizing festival experience and Schedule Creation

Festival-goers often split up when they want to see different artists performing on different stages at the same time. Festivo solves this by inviting groups of friends to join a shared voting system. Users rate their favorite artists, and the app uses AI to calculate a balanced schedule for the group-ensuring time and interests are divided fairly so everyone can enjoy the best the festival has to offer.
The app also provides a dynamic schedule that updates in real time, showing exactly what’s happening at any given moment. If a user wants to scroll manually, there’s also an option to switch back to a manual schedule with a single tap
